The Divine Mama Breastfeeding Diet

I get a lot of questions from mothers about what they should eat while breastfeeding.  While lactogenic foods are important, they are just one part of a more comprehensive diet and lifestyle plan that will help you and your baby reach optimal health while breastfeeding. 

I have studied over fifty different dietary theories as a pharmacist and nutrition counselor. Unfortunately, I have found that most mainstream theories contradict themselves, making it difficult to sift through all of the information and make the best decisions for you and your baby. 

From my knowledge of lactogenic foods and from my personal experiences, I’ve created an official Divine Mama Breastfeeding Diet with the intention of providing you with simple guidelines that will help take the guesswork out of your quest for wellness.  

There are 5 main principles of the diet...

1)  Eat REAL food

ISN’T ALL FOOD REAL? Sadly, the answer is a resounding, no. The processed foods that abound in our grocery stores and restaurants are far from the wholesome, real foods that our bodies need to be healthy. So, what is real food? Real foods are natural, whole foods that are produced without the interference of man-made products or processes. 

2) Nourish your body and balance your blood sugar

Every morsel of food you put into your body has an impact on your physical and mental well-being. You want to use that incredible tool to the utmost efficacy, for your body and your baby’s. During pregnancy and while breast feeding, your body can become quite deficient in such vital nutrients as essential fatty acids, B vitamins, magnesium, and iron. 

3) Address and calm infammation

Low-level inflammation is a chronic, mild inflammation that can be caused by an unhealthy diet of refined sugars,
grain, and grain-fed meat and dairy. Why? Processed, conventionally grown grains and grain- 
fed meats contain a high level of gluten. The body mistakes this gluten for the proteins found in harmful bacteria, and it attacks. That attack causes inflammation in the gut. 

4) Add green volume

Apparently, leafy green vegetables have the ability to communicate with T-bet, a gene respon- sible for generating these immune cells. The kale and spinach actually tell the body to build up the immune system! Dr. Gabrielle Belz, one of the researchers working on the project, claims that scientists are interested in learning more about how this communication occurs and the implication it might have on our relationship to food. 

5) Be a mindful, moving Mama

It’s incredibly important to be aware of your body, your mind, and your general state-of-being after you have a baby. Not only for your own sake, but because the infant that you hold so close to you will begin to feel your stress and anxiety as well as your peace, love, and serenity.  If mama is well, then baby will be calmer, healthier, and happier in general.
